Enroll for Summer Term! Apply for scholarships by April 9
Spring has officially sprung, so it’s time to think summer. If you’re dreaming of Babcock ice cream and studying on the Terrace, you’ll want to consider enrolling in Summer Term. But even if your summer plans don’t include time in Madison, you can still take courses online from almost anywhere.
Search the Summer 2023 Course Guide to see what options might help you stay on track for graduation or lighten your load for fall or spring. Summer is also a great time to enroll in a popular course or focus on a challenging one.
“Students come with a wide variety of academic goals, and Summer Term gives them options and flexibility to tailor their courses and activities to achieve those goals and fit with their lives,” says Aphra Mednick, associate dean for Summer Term.
By designing the summer that accommodates your schedule, you can still travel, work or do an internship while earning credit. For inspiration, here are Summer Term plans from a few fellow Badgers:
- Samuel Peterson graduated with a major in information systems and data science. Last summer, with the help of a Summer Finish scholarship, he took English 176, asynchronous and online. Samuel added, “It has always been my goal to graduate from UW–Madison in three years. Summer Term and its respective scholarships have been a great resource to achieve this goal, as I’ve completed a total of seven courses during multiple Summer Terms!”
- Junior Sara Kaska, majoring in neurobiology and Spanish, took Spanish 225, did research on campus and worked at a rewarding job with UW Health during the summer of 2022. Of course, she also spent time some time on the Terrace.
- Isa Hernandez-White is a junior majoring in psychology with a Certificate in Chican@ & Latin@ Studies. As a 2022 summer intern for the City of Madison, she supplemented her classroom learning with professional experience. She also worked as a student intern with the Morgridge Center for Public Service and received a student employment award for her work there.
- Thomas Harris a senior studying biochemistry with a certificate in biocore. Last summer, he interned in Munich, Germany, at the Ludwig Maximilian University in a lab researching RNA splicing proteins using fruit flies as the model organism.
- In the summer of 2019, Linda Duong participated in the International Student Summer Institute. She explored UW–Madison and improved her English skills. “One of the best things I got from the program was meeting people,” she said. “They all became my best friends.”
There are endless ways to design a Summer Term that lets you meet your academic and career goals while still allowing you the flexibility to savor the season. Summer Term course sessions are 3, 4 or 8 weeks long and start as early as May 22. Choose from more than 1,000 courses, with hundreds available online.
And with the Undergraduate Scholarship for Summer Study and Summer Finish scholarships, you can apply for a Summer Term scholarship to assist with the costs of your summer study. If you’re staying on campus, the Summer Housing Boost program may help you cover the cost of living in residence halls during Summer Term. But act fast – the deadline to apply for these programs is April 9.
